Role of the Speaker

The office of the Speaker focuses on the performance of functions prescribed by section 37 of the Municipal Structures act, 1998 and the powers delegated to the Speaker by Council in line with section 32 of same act.

In between the Council sittings, the office of the Speaker ensures that the legislative component performs its oversight function effectively and efficiently. In this regard, the Speaker offers full support to Council Committees to enable them to perform their tasks with ease and thereafter report to Council accordingly. Thus Council is able to convene in line with its schedule; Councillor Interests are being taken care of and the programmes to ensure the participation and involvement by our stake holders and the general public in governance matters are in place.
